The Top 3 Greases For Aircraft Wheel Bearings

The Top 3 Greases For Aircraft Wheel Bearings

How do you decide on the grease for aircraft wheel bearings?

I recently read an article about how some people, cough-cough, not you, were using automotive grease. From a cost standpoint, this was a great idea. It was cheap! But any old grease will not do.

You want something reliable.

Something that prolongs the use of your assets. And doesn’t cause "you know what" to hit the fan (it rhymes with fit). I’ve seen a lot of questions asking "what type of aircraft wheel bearing grease should maintenance teams use?", so here’s a quick little guide to help you.

3 Greases Used For Aircraft Wheel Bearings

Mobil SHC100 Aviation Grease

Our first pick is Mobil SHC100. Mobil is a reputable brand and this product has a wide range of uses. Think…multipurpose in a tube. It’s also a great grease for your aircraft wheel bearings.

It’s recommended for high speed, heavy load applications such as wheel bearings and slower speed, high load applications such as landing gear bearings, slides, and joints. It provides outstanding protection at operating temperatures from -54 ºC (-65 ºF) to 177 ºC (350 ºF).

SHC 100 is a performance synthetic grease. That means…it’s the good stuff!

It has a combination of unique features of a polyalphaolefin (PAO) synthetic base fluid with those of a high-quality lithium complex soap thickener. The thickener system provides a high dropping point, excellent resistance to water wash, and a tenacious structural stability.

Okay, that was a little boring but the point is…it’s a great choice.

Royco 22CF (Specifications:  MIL‐PRF‐81322G #2)

Royce is another good product. The gel-type inorganic grease will protect your aircraft against friction while performing well over a wide temperature range. It’s suitable for use in wheel bearings, instruments, gearboxes, anti-friction bearings, rotor bearings, actuators and general airframe applications.

Additives for oxidation and corrosion stability as well as load carrying and rust protection are provided to improve severe duty performance over extreme temperature ranges.

Another good grease for aircraft wheel bearings.

Braycote 622 (Specifications:  MIL‐PRF‐81322G #2)

Castrol Braycote 622 is a synthetic hydrocarbon base, non-soap thickened grease. It offers great high and low-temperature properties, water resistance, and extreme pressure characteristics making it suitable for applications that exceed the capabilities of the best conventional greases.

Suited for aircraft applications such as wheel bearings, helicopter rotor bearings, control systems, applications including conveyor bearings, small alternator bearings operating at temperatures near 350ºF (177ºC), high-speed miniature ball bearings, and bearing situations where oscillation, vibration, and fretting create problems.

So there’s all the technical stuff. But now you have to make a choice.
